WERLIN MAKES SPANISH ENTRANCE
SEVILLE, Spain -- Jessica “Cosmo” Werlin has arrived safely in Seville, Michigan-Cornell-Penn Consortium officials confirmed.
Werlin, sponsored by the Michigan-Cornell-Penn Consortium (MCP), is currently lodged in the Hotel Becquer, located in downtown Seville, from which she will explore the city during the initial orientation period of the program. Following this week she will be staying with a host family.
Werlin’s first impressions of the city were positive, although her first experiences with the locals were trying. “I arrived late at night, so everything in the airport was closed,” said Werlin in an interview this morning. “After I finally managed to come across the taxi stand, I did a lot of fumbling with my driver. Although, seeing billboards for IKEA and hearing Dido and David Guetta on the radio as we drove into the city made me feel better.”
MCP requires that participants speak spanish at all times. Although Werlin has studied Spanish since middle school, the language is still a challenge. “At times it’s frustrating, because I can’t say things with the right slant. Or worse yet, they don’t understand me at all,” Werlin laughed.
Werlin selected to enter MCP last spring, upon hearing about her brother Jake Werlin’s positive study abroad experience. “Jake just kept telling me, ‘You’ve got to, you’ve got to,’” said Werlin. “He insisted it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I didn’t want to pass something like that up.”
Werlin will remain in the country through December as part of her study-abroad semester via the Consortium.
